This article presents the historical links between the Landless Rural Workers’ Movement (MST) and the Catholic Church and provides a critical introduction to the hermeneutics of liberation theology. Then, it uses narrative analysis to demonstrate that, by repeatedly presenting characters who are wealthy landowners and homeowners, the gospel of Luke proposes a theological and an ethical point. The theological point is that God is the true owner of land as an economic good. The ethical point is that, since God is the supreme owner of land, persons who own real estate should use it in altruistic rather than selfish ways.
